How often should I wash my hair?

This is a common discussion I have with my clients. Some of them are washing their hair way too often and some, well some aren’t washing it frequently enough. I have heard a lot of reasons for either side of this thought process. Some wash their hair every day because they think they have to because they take a shower every day, while others like the build-up because it prevents their hair from getting poofy (technical term right here). I’m not going to throw anyone under the bus but I also have some who just let it ride just because.

When it comes down to it, what I usually say is if it's not greasy, smelly, or unmanageable then wait til your next shower and go from there. If you have shorter hair and use a wax or pomade chances are you will need to shampoo and condition every day. This is because of the product and your body's natural oils. When these two mix your hair will likely get too greasy overnight and if that doesn’t happen the bed head will get you, making your hair more than likely an unmanageable mess. Maybe you have shorter or longer hair that you put nothing in or maybe just a little leave-in conditioner or oil. In this case, you can probably go a couple of days without washing or conditioning it. Ok so now you say but I have long hair, I blow it out and\or use hot tools on my hair and have several products in it. With these clients, I definitely want to see them going a couple of days without washing their hair. Why you ask! It’s simple, their hair is already going through a lot. If you wash, blow out, and use hot tools on your hair every day you are drying it out each time. At the end of the day, it is good to clean your hair but we want to be careful we are not drying it or our scalp out in the process. Talk to your stylist about how frequently and what products are right for you.
